While cereals remain an essential part of Indian cuisine and culture, nutritionists say the problem begins when they dominate the plate entirely. A balanced diet requires adequate portions of protein, fibre, vitamins and healthy fats, nutrients that come from pulses, fruits, vegetables, dairy, nuts and animal-based foods. But the study suggests these food groups are still missing from everyday meals across much of the country. And this is true for all meals that Indians take everyday.
