Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh left Imphal for New Delhi on Monday morning, August 24, to meet senior central leaders and discuss issues concerning the violence-hit state.
According to officials, Singh’s visit comes amid renewed political discussions over the prevailing situation in Manipur and growing demands for the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of the upcoming Census exercise.
The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation has been leading protests demanding that the NRC in Manipur be updated with 1951 as the base year. The group has argued that updating the register would help identify illegal immigrants in the state.
Singh had recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and apprised him of the demand for updating the NRC before the Census exercise.
A BJP functionary said the former chief minister had been called by central leaders to discuss various issues concerning Manipur.
Singh’s visit to the national capital comes at a time when NRC updation, demographic concerns and delimitation remain politically sensitive issues in the state. The former chief minister resigned from his post in February 2025 amid the continuing ethnic conflict in Manipur.
The latest Delhi visit is expected to draw attention as political activity surrounding Manipur’s security, demographic and administrative issues continues to intensify.
