“Certain years, and this year has been a really, really bad year,” Cirillo says, pointing to rising water temperatures, rain and changing weather patterns as factors that can help the bacteria grow. The risk is mainly associated with coastal and brackish water – the areas where fresh and salt water meet. “That’s where Vibrio lives. It prefers that environment,” he explains.
