Investigators said that Zafar had earlier lived in Meerut, where he studied at a madrasa. During this period, he allegedly came across content related to Jaish-e-Mohammed and its chief Masood Azhar. The accused during the questioning told ATS that he subsequently became influenced by Azhar’s speeches and began sharing jihadist and provocative content on social media. He expressed an interest in becoming a mujahid and promoted the idea of violent jihad.
