Before all of that, John was a talented pitcher facing what looked like the end of his career. At age 31, he suffered an elbow injury that, at the time, would have finished most pitchers for good. Instead, he became the first athlete to undergo a groundbreaking procedure called ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe in 1974.
