New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on the rising number of suicides among Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.
According to the report, 19 CRPF personnel died by suicide between January and May 22, 2026. The report, citing CRPF data, also said that 59 personnel died by suicide in 2025, the highest number recorded by the force in the last five years.
The NHRC said that if the reported figures are correct, the issue raises serious concerns over the right to life of personnel serving in the country’s largest Central Armed Police Force.
The Commission has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Director General of CRPF, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report published on August 11, a total of 281 CRPF personnel died by suicide between 2021 and 2025. Of these, around 216 were reportedly on duty at the time.
The reported figures show that the CRPF recorded 57 suicides in 2021, 43 in 2022, 57 in 2023, 46 in 2024 and 59 in 2025. The NHRC is seeking details from the authorities to examine the circumstances behind the deaths and the measures being taken to address the issue.
The Commission said further action would be taken after receiving the reports from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the CRPF.
