A different picture of Bastar unfolded at the National Handloom Day celebrations in Raipur, as rehabilitated Naxal women from Bastar and Sukma walked the ramp in traditional ensembles made under the ‘Chhattisgarh Handloom’ initiative.
For women once caught in a cycle of violence and armed insurgency, the moment marked a striking transition — from a life associated with guns and conflict to one centred on skills, culture, dignity and self-reliance.
With confidence, the women showcased traditional handloom attire, offering a glimpse of a changing Bastar where indigenous craft and livelihoods are increasingly becoming symbols of empowerment.
The event also saw Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai launch ‘Koshal Fab’, a premium brand aimed at giving the state’s traditional Kosa silk a stronger identity and wider market presence.
The initiative seeks to take Chhattisgarh’s distinctive Kosa silk beyond local markets while strengthening the livelihoods of artisans associated with the traditional craft.
The symbolism of the event was hard to miss — as the rehabilitated women walked the ramp in handwoven attire, traditional looms and Kosa silk took centre stage, presenting a narrative of Bastar that moves beyond its troubled past.
The message from the celebrations was clear: Bastar’s emerging identity is being woven around skill, culture and self-reliance — rather than guns and violence.
