What Is Sawan And Why Does It Matter?

Sawan falls during the month of monsoon and is considered one of the most sacred periods in the Hindu calendar. Devotees observe fasts, visit temples, chant mantras and dedicate themselves to prayer and devotion throughout the month. Mondays during Sawan, known as Shravan Somvar, hold special importance, and many people also observe Mangala Gauri Vrat, a fast kept by married women for marital harmony and the blessing of Shiva and Parvati’s union on the household.
