If this all sounds perfectly fascinating to you and you find yourself wondering what exactly this six-storey library houses, we have two historically alluring specimens to offer up. First, is the Mellon Alchemy collection. Made up over 300 medieval and Renaissance-era manuscripts, the collection covers everything from alchemy to astrology and even early chemistry. It’s dotted with rare notes from the Isaac Newton, flanked by a 20-foot long Ripley Scroll illustration. Also being nourished by the same filtered light and air is the Voynich Manuscript. This, is a 240-page book from the early 1400s with drawings that will have you up late at night attempting to decode their eerie oddities. What’s better, it’s written entirely in an extinct language, so for all practical purposes, no living being can actually tell what the book is about.
