Heavy rains continue to batter Odisha, leaving several districts grappling with flood-like conditions as overflowing rivers and submerged roads disrupt normal life. Amid the worsening situation, a dramatic incident from Dhenkanal district has gone viral after a JCB excavator was swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross a bridge.
Fortunately, the machine’s operator was rescued safely, averting what could have been a major tragedy.
The incident reportedly took place on the Ramial Bridge under Marthapur Panchayat in Dhenkanal district. According to reports, the JCB was travelling from Marthapur village to Odhana village when it attempted to cross the bridge despite water flowing over its surface.
As the excavator moved across the bridge, the force of the floodwaters reportedly caused the operator to lose control of the vehicle. Within moments, the JCB was swept away by the powerful current, leaving onlookers shocked as it was carried downstream.
The incident triggered panic among local residents, many of whom rushed to the spot to help. With the assistance of locals and the district administration, the operator was rescued safely. While no casualties were reported, the excavator could not be saved and was carried away by the raging waters.
The incident comes as continuous rainfall has caused water levels in several rivers across Odisha to rise above the danger mark, resulting in flooding in multiple districts. Authorities have been urging residents to avoid travelling through inundated areas, refrain from crossing submerged bridges or waterlogged roads, and strictly follow official safety advisories until conditions improve.
Although the operator escaped without injury, the incident highlights the immense force of monsoon floodwaters and the serious risks associated with attempting to cross flooded stretches, even in heavy machinery.

According to the latest figures released by the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), the floods have impacted six districts, 44 blocks, 233 gram panchayats and 748 villages. More than 2.03 lakh people have been affected, with inundated low-lying areas, disrupted daily life and authorities continuing relief, rescue and monitoring operations as the situation remains critical.
