A widespread power outage struck several parts of Kenya on Wednesday night, leaving Nairobi and multiple other regions without electricity as Kenya Power and Lighting Company confirmed disruptions affecting large parts of the country.
In a statement issued at 9:05 p.m. on July 29, Kenya Power said the outage affected customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya and parts of the Central Rift.
The utility added that parts of the North Rift and Western regions remained on electricity supply.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt. Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply,” the company said.
Kenya Power said its technical teams were working to restore electricity to the affected areas as quickly as possible and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
The statement came after numerous Kenyans reported power outages on social media, prompting speculation that the blackout had spread nationwide.
At around 8:30 p.m., users on X reported electricity outages in Nairobi, Mombasa, Mwea, Lower Kabete, Ngong and Gigiri, adding to concerns about the scale of the disruption.
The blackout affected transport, businesses and household activities in Nairobi, according to local reports, as restoration efforts continued across the affected regions.
