Three people were killed and four others, including a 2-year-old boy, were injured after gunfire erupted during the Bite of Seattle festival at Seattle Center on Sunday evening, according to Seattle police.
Investigators said early findings indicate two suspects exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory, with bystanders caught in the crossfire. Police said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, but are continuing to search for a second suspect.
The victims who died were identified as a 19-year-old man, a 44-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman. Two died at the scene, while the third later died at Harborview Medical Center.
Four victims, including the toddler, were taken to Harborview Medical Center. Hospital officials said the child remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition Monday, while a 39-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man had been discharged. A separate 27-year-old man treated at UW Medical Center-Montlake was also discharged.
The shooting occurred shortly after 6 PM during the annual food festival, prompting panic as attendees ran for safety. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots before families, including people carrying children, fled the area. Vendors abandoned food booths as police secured the scene.
Mayor Katie Wilson called the incident “an unbelievable tragedy,” while Acting Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis praised officers already stationed at the event for moving toward the gunfire and preventing additional casualties.
What We Know About the Suspect
Police said a 15-year-old boy was detained after investigators determined he allegedly opened fire in the crowd. Authorities said the teen has not yet been formally arrested, though the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said he was expected to make his first court appearance Monday.
Investigators believe two suspects were shooting at each other. One suspect surrendered at the scene and was taken into custody for questioning, while the second suspect fled and remains outstanding. Police have not released a description of the person still being sought.
The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of any remaining suspect. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
