The images and videos from yesterday’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest are difficult to watch. Students and young protesters running from tear gas, police lathi-charging crowds, so many more looking on in disbelief as those demanding answers from the country’s education system found themselves confronting force instead. Students who joined the movement were not asking for privilege, they were asking for something remarkably simple fair examinations, fair evaluation, transparency and accountability. This year has been one crisis after another… Paper leaks, flawed assessments, OSM controversy, opaque decision-making, delayed results and an examination system that to many students often appears more focused on defending itself than acknowledging and correcting its mistakes. Alongside this is another anxiety that cannot be separated from the conversation… an uncertain job market and rising unemployment, leaving young Indians increasingly fearful that even years of hard work may not guarantee opportunity.
