“I think that the referee they’ve selected, obviously—referees on the MLS are well known in America and well respected in America. So from that perspective, it’s a good appointment. However, when I look at his last performance in the World Cup a few days ago, I felt that it wasn’t his best performance. The reasoning behind that, I think his decision-making was slow, inconsistent, and the reasoning behind that was his foundation of refereeing is to see, recognise, think, and act. I felt that at times he was falling behind play, so the actual distance between him and play was too much. And I think those situations, when you’re at the World Cup, you want the elite referees and you want them to be absolutely on form,” he told Sports Now in an exclusive interview.
