nmc clears 50 more mbbs seats for gmc srinagar: intake to reach 250 from 2026-27

On Friday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved an increase of 50 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) seats at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar. The revised intake will be effective from the upcoming academic year.

An official spokesperson told PTI that the total number of MBBS seats at GMC Srinagar will rise from 200 to 250, effective from the upcoming academic year 2026-27. The move is expected to provide additional opportunities for medical aspirants in the region.

Seat Increase Follows Regulatory Approval Process

The Health and Medical Education Department said the NMC has granted permission to enhance the annual intake capacity at GMC Srinagar to strengthen the medical education and healthcare delivery system in Jammu and Kashmir

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC has issued the Letter of Permission (LoP) under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, approving the increase of 50 MBBS seats, the spokesperson added.

He also said that GMC Srinagar had received approval for an additional 20 seats last year. The latest approval continues the expansion of intake capacity at the institution.

The decision to increase seats follows an evaluation by MARB under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023, the spokesperson said. This process ensures that institutions meet the required standards before any increase in intake is permitted.

The increase in seats is expected to further strengthen GMC Srinagar’s position as one of the premier medical colleges in the country, the spokesperson said.
