kolkata school changes exam schedule for fifa world cup 2026 final; new dates announced

South Point High School, Kolkata, has postponed a section of its July examination schedule, citing students’ interest in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The decision, communicated through an official circular dated July 1, applies to students of Classes VI to XII and affects examinations originally scheduled for July 20 and July 21.

According to the notice, the school has deferred the Periodic Assessment I, Pre Midterm Test and Unit Test I that were slated for the two days immediately following the FIFA World Cup final, which will be played on July 19, 2026.

The circular, issued to parents and guardians, states that the decision has been taken “keeping in mind the pupils’ interest in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.”

Under the revised schedule, examinations that were to be conducted on Monday, July 20, will now be held on Wednesday, July 29. Similarly, tests scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, have been shifted to Thursday, July 30.

Revised Schedule Applicable Only to Select Exams

The school has clarified that the changes are limited to the examinations falling on July 20 and July 21. All other examinations will continue according to the existing academic calendar without any modification.

The circular has been addressed to parents and guardians of students from Classes VI to XII and bears the reference number 52/P&G/2026-27. It has been issued under the authority of the school principal.

The move has drawn attention as schools generally avoid altering examination schedules unless required by administrative, weather-related or public emergency reasons. In this case, the institution has explicitly linked the rescheduling to one of the biggest sporting events in the world, acknowledging the widespread interest the FIFA World Cup final generates among students.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final is scheduled to take place on July 19, with millions of viewers expected to tune in globally. By postponing examinations that were due the following day, the school appears to have sought to accommodate students who may wish to watch the championship match without affecting their exam preparation or performance.

Students and parents have been advised to note the revised dates, while continuing to follow the original timetable for all remaining examinations.
