Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Why Lord Jagannath Stays at the Gundicha Temple for Seven Days

During this time, devotees are not allowed to have darshan of the deity. Lord Jagannath is believed to rest in isolation. The deity is treated with special herbal pastes and treatments as part of the symbolic healing process. This period is known as Anasara (or Anavasara). After these 15 days, the deity is considered fully recovered and healed. The Rath Yatra begins immediately afterwards, and this first public appearance is also celebrated as the Netrotsava festival or Nava Yauvanotsava.
