Born David Henry Thomsett in Surrey, England, on September 13, 1941, Clayton-Thomas was the son of Fred Thomsett, a Canadian soldier, and Freda, an English music student. He was raised in a Toronto suburb, but a strained relationship with his father left him homeless as a teenager.
