When asked why he didn’t want to read the source material from Martin, Toussaint stated it was a deliberate choice. He explained, “I was very clear that these are two different mediums. The great thing about a book is, of course, most of the work is done by you and your imagination. On the screen, of course, that’s down to the writers and the directors and so forth. So I didn’t want to read the books and then fall in love with something that my character is reported to do in the book and then find that the makers decided, no, that wouldn’t work for television.”
