Many Americans will have Friday, June 19, off for Juneteenth, the federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States. While most retail stores will stay open, several major financial and government services will pause operations.
The US stock market will be closed on Juneteenth, with both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq observing the holiday. Major banks, including Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo, will also be closed.
Juneteenth—also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day—commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery in the United States.
