Versailles was also the site of another landmark political event. On January 18, 1871, King Wilhelm I of Prussia was proclaimed German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors, formally creating the German Empire. The choice of the same venue for the 1919 peace treaty was widely viewed as a symbolic reversal of German triumph.
