Why True Crime Is Becoming Serious Literature Rather Than Guilty Pleasure

Calling true crime “serious literature” is not, of course, a new development. Truman Capote famously attempted to elevate accounts of real murder through ‘In Cold Blood’, first published in The New Yorker in 1965. He described his approach as a “nonfiction novel”, combining reporting with techniques more readily associated with fiction. Its influence has been enormous, although later scrutiny has also challenged Capote’s claims of complete factual accuracy.
