When we talk about cancer, it is almost always in terms of genes, smoking, pollution, alcohol, diet and other environmental stressors. However, a new global analaysis points towards a new thing altogether – infections. Researchers are estimating that around 2.4 million cancer cases worldwide in 2024, that makes up about 12% of all new cancer diagnoses, were due to infections. The findings were first published in The Lancet Oncology and suggest that a substantial share of these cancers could potentially be prevented if there was vaccination, screening, timely testing and treatment of certain infections involved.
