GUWAHATI: Assam Police have apprehended two women suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi nationals during an operation aboard the Saraighat Express, which was travelling from Silchar to Howrah, officials said.
According to DCP (Border) Kulandra Nath Deka, police acted on a tip-off regarding suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals travelling on the train. A team intercepted the train and detained the two women in Guwahati.
During the subsequent questioning and search, police allegedly recovered two Aadhaar cards suspected to be fake from their possession. Bangladesh-issued currency notes in the denomination of ₹200 were also recovered, police said.
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the two women under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.
Police said further proceedings are underway, and the women are expected to be deported from India in the coming days, subject to completion of the required legal formalities.
The investigation is continuing to ascertain their identity, nationality and the circumstances under which the alleged fake documents were obtained.
