In many COVID-19-related cases, the femoral head – the ball-shaped top portion of the thigh bone that fits into the hip socket – becomes damaged. As the bone collapses, patients develop severe pain, stiffness, limping, and difficulty walking. If diagnosed too late, many patients ultimately require total hip replacement surgery.
