In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public for the first time. Less than four years later, around half of U.S. adults say they use AI chatbots, including 24% who use them daily. A new study from the Pew Research Center, titled “How Much of the Internet Is Written With AI?”, examines how extensively AI-generated or AI-edited language has made its way across the web. As AI tools become increasingly capable of producing human-sounding text, one basic question is becoming harder to ignore: how much of the content we read online is now written by AI rather than people?
