Investors holding older Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) now have a clearer timeline for exiting their investments before the end of the eight-year maturity period. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has published the premature redemption schedule for 32 SGB tranches that will become eligible for early redemption between October 2026 and March 2027. The central bank released the calendar on August 21, 2026. The eligible bonds were issued between June 2019 and March 2022 and belong to the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 series.
Under the SGB framework, investors can seek premature redemption once five years have passed from the bond’s issue date. However, eligibility alone does not automatically trigger redemption. Investors must submit their request within the specified window.
Five-Year Rule Opens Early Exit Route For SGB Holders
Sovereign Gold Bonds normally have an eight-year tenure. However, the scheme provides investors with an option to redeem their holdings prematurely after completing five years from the date of issue.
This provision can be useful for investors who want to realise their investment before the scheduled maturity date. The RBI’s latest calendar is particularly important because each tranche has a specific redemption date as well as a separate period during which investors can place their requests.
Missing that window could mean that an investor has to wait until another eligible redemption opportunity becomes available.
The latest schedule begins with the 2019-20 Series V on October 15, 2026, and runs through the 2019-20 Series IV on March 17, 2027.

How Investors Can Submit Redemption Requests
SGB holders who want to use the premature redemption facility must submit their requests through the applicable channels. The RBI calendar includes receiving offices, NSDL, CDSL and RBI Retail Direct among the channels through which investors can place redemption requests.
The exact procedure can differ depending on how the SGB is held. Investors should therefore check with their bank, demat account provider or relevant authorised platform and complete the process within the prescribed request period.
Investors should also distinguish between the redemption date and the request window. The former indicates when the bond becomes eligible for premature redemption, while the latter is the period during which the investor must submit the request.
The RBI has also indicated that the dates mentioned in the calendar could change if an unscheduled holiday affects the prescribed schedule. Investors should therefore check for any subsequent RBI notification before initiating the redemption process.
