Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has delivered ‘Mangrol’, the third of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) being built for the Indian Navy, in a move aimed at strengthening the force’s underwater surveillance and anti-submarine capabilities.

The vessel was delivered to the Indian Navy on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Once the ship is delivered, the Navy carries out crew integration, final runs and checks to ensure that the vessel is fully combat-ready before the official flag-hoisting ceremony, also known as the commissioning of the ship.

Built by CSL in Kochi, Mangrol has more than 80% indigenous content and is designed for underwater surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations in coastal waters, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine warfare.

The vessel is powered by waterjets and is equipped with advanced torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, radars and sonars.

The ship has been named after Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in Gujarat’s Junagadh district known for its marine fishing industry. The name also carries a naval legacy, recalling the erstwhile INS Mangrol, an Indian Naval Minesweeper that remained in service until 2004.

The delivery marks another step in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding programme and aligns with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The induction comes as India continues to focus on strengthening its anti-submarine warfare capabilities amid growing maritime security challenges in the region. Pakistan is also inducting Chinese-built submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which enables conventional submarines to remain submerged for longer periods.

India is also developing its own AIP-equipped submarine capability, with the technology expected to enhance the endurance of its conventional submarines underwater.
