Security has been tightened across Shillong as authorities remain on alert amid the ongoing tension surrounding the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) protests. However, no sit-in demonstration has been reported so far, police said.
In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Dangsan Khyriem, Superintendent of Police (City), Shillong, said the situation was currently under control and that additional measures had been put in place to maintain law and order.
“Things are under control now. We have also deployed special teams for patrolling during the night to ensure security and prevent any untoward incident,” Khyriem said.
Authorities have already issued orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as a precautionary measure. Police had anticipated a possible sit-in demonstration by the KSU and accordingly deployed adequate security personnel across the jurisdiction of Sadar Police Station.
Officials said the deployment was aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of the public in the event of any unrest. However, as of now, there has been no report or indication of a sit-in protest taking place.
The situation continues to be closely monitored, with security personnel maintaining a presence at key locations across Shillong and special teams carrying out night patrols as a precautionary measure.
