Resistance is a natural biological phenomenon. Bacteria multiply rapidly and, through genetic changes and exchange of resistance genes, some acquire the ability to survive an antibiotic, in simple words they become immune to antibiotics. When antibiotics are used, the susceptible bacteria are killed while resistant ones have a better chance of surviving and multiplying. Every unnecessary antibiotic prescription therefore creates an opportunity for resistance. But resistant bacteria do not stay where they were born. They can spread from one person to another, through healthcare facilities, communities, food, animals and as also the environment. This is why antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not simply a problem for the person taking an antibiotic erratically. It is a problem for all of us.
