In the last few years, especially in the Western market– ‘whitewashing’ of Indian things has turned into something of a fashion. What was ‘Dupatta’ for centuries in India became a ‘Scandinavian scarf’ quite recently; what were India’s traditional ‘Kolhapuri chappals’ became ‘leather sandals’, similarly, ‘Jhumkas’ turned into ‘statement earrings’, ‘Bandhani’ became ‘tie-dye’, ‘Mehendi’ became ‘henna body art’, and the list goes on. And just when many thought that it couldn’t go any longer– IKEA ended up coming up with “Chrome plates”.
Taking to social media, a US woman– Amanda Monsen- shared a video, which showed her getting excited over “Chrome Plates” at an IKEA store. The plates were something that the woman wanted for a long time, ever since she had allegedly seen them on her “For You Page”. Allegedly, the plates were worth USD 7.99 (approximately Rs 764).
As soon as the video was shared online, it specifically went viral in India– Confused? Well, turns out, the “Chrome Plates” in question were simply “Steel Thalis”!
From all kinds of jokes to even angry reactions of “yet another Indian thing being Westernised”, the internet surely had a lot to say.
Check out the viral post:
“Obsessed with all things chrome! So happy they had these cutie plates/trays that I’ve been wanting,” the post read.
The post was shared on Instagram, by the handle ‘amandamonsen’. The post was shared a while ago and pulled many views from netizens.
Internet’s reactions:
“Steel ki thali hai woh! (It’s a steel plate),” a user said. “The West loves Indian things, just not giving India the credit,” commented the next person. “Come to India, you will get ‘chrome plates’ for a dollar,” added another.
“The West loves Indian things, just not giving India the credit,” added another person. “Cheapest things in India always become super expensive in western world,” added another. “Darling I have 3-4 sets of every possible chrome utensil. Every possible chrome utensil and I mean it,” added another person in the comments.
