Mirror-decoded invitations, waiters with animal heads, and dinner served on mannequin bodies, the Rothschild Surrealist Ball was something that created a dent in the history of fashion. Held at Château de Ferrières on December 12, 1972, the evening was no ordinary party of the rich, it was more a fever dream brought to life. And the real spectacle came with the fashion. Marie-Hélène de Rothschild wore a stag’s head with diamond “tears.” Audrey Hepburn arrived in a birdcage headpiece, and Hélène Rochas wore a gramophone. Bizarre, theatrical and slightly grotesque, the ball proved fashion can provoke, amuse and make you unforgettable.
