According to court records, the case started after OpenAI detected a series of disturbing messages from Darren Zhou, who allegedly used ChatGPT to discuss plans to rape and kill his ex-girlfriend. The firm reported the conversation to federal authorities, who later obtained around two months of Zhou’s chats with the chatbot. Zhou had started using ChatGPT in March, around after six months of his breakup. In the beginning, it was only about conversations related to his jealousy and desire. But the conversation took a wild turn, with the investigators saying Zhou started discussing plans involving rape, murder, and suicide.
