A massive landslide blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) on the Srinagar-bound carriageway at Dhramthal in the Chenani area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district.
The landslide brought traffic movement on the affected stretch to a halt as large amounts of debris and rocks fell onto the highway. The latest incident comes as several parts of the Jammu region continue to face problems caused by heavy rainfall, landslides and flash floods.
Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has intensified clearance operations on National Highway 144 (NH-144) in the Rajouri-Poonch sector after several stretches were hit by landslides and falling boulders. BRO teams have been using heavy machinery to remove debris and boulders and restore road connectivity in the affected areas, as per reports.
A major boulder-triggered landslide was reported at Nadpur and Thalka on July 19 during flash floods. Since then, BRO personnel have been carrying out continuous clearance work at the affected locations.
Residents have praised the BRO and district administration for their efforts to restore connectivity. Khadim Hussain, a resident of Anaipur in Thalka, said the BRO teams have been working whenever weather conditions allow.
“When the rain stops, you can see them working. They are doing a very good job,” Hussain said. Another resident, Rajesh Kumar, said BRO personnel were working day and night to clear the landslides.
“Many landslides have happened. Houses have been damaged. In two to four days, the landslides will be over. I am thankful to BRO. They are working day and night,” Kumar said.
The BRO has continued to deploy heavy equipment at the affected sites to clear debris and boulders and restore traffic movement. The clearance work on NH-144 is important for maintaining connectivity between Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch, which was disrupted following heavy rainfall and flash floods.
