Every match carries an expected score, calculated from both players’ current ratings before a single point is played. If you score more than that expectation, your rating rises, even in a loss. Score less than expected, and it falls, even in a win. A 4.5-rated player who narrowly beats a 3.0 hasn’t performed to their level, and the rating reflects that gap rather than the result alone.
