The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy is continuing at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts, with prosecutors and defence lawyers presenting evidence over the deaths of her three children.
Clancy, 35, a former labour and delivery nurse from Duxbury, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, who was eight months old.
What is the case against Lindsay Clancy?
Prosecutors allege that Clancy strangled her three children with exercise bands inside the basement of the family home on January 24, 2023. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, had reportedly left the house to collect medication and dinner.
After the children were attacked, Clancy cut her wrists and neck before jumping from a second-floor window. The fall left her paralysed below the sternum, and she now attends court in a wheelchair.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty.
The defence does not dispute that she was responsible for the children’s deaths. Instead, her lawyers argue that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from severe postpartum mental illness, including psychosis.
Her defence team has also argued that her condition was aggravated by medication and shortcomings in the mental healthcare she received.
When did the Lindsay Clancy trial begin?
Jury selection began on July 20, 2026, with an 18-member jury selected within roughly four days.
Opening statements and testimony began on July 27. By August 10, the proceedings had entered their third week of testimony.
Psychiatrist Dr Jennifer Tufts has been among the medical experts to testify. She returned to the witness stand on Monday for further questioning from Clancy’s defence lawyers.
The case is expected to feature extensive medical and psychiatric evidence as both sides seek to establish whether Clancy understood the nature and consequences of her actions at the time of the killings.
When could the Lindsay Clancy trial end?
There is no fixed end date for the trial.
Before proceedings began, prosecutors estimated that the case could last between four and six weeks, while some estimates extended to eight weeks. The defence anticipated roughly four to five weeks. Judge William Sullivan had previously told prospective jurors to expect the trial to last approximately six to eight weeks.
The trial remains broadly within that expected timeframe.
Further medical and expert testimony is expected before the defence presents its case. Closing arguments will follow, after which the jury will begin deliberations.
If proceedings continue at their current pace, a verdict could potentially be reached between late August and September. However, the timeline could shift depending on the amount of evidence still to be presented and the length of jury deliberations.
Will Lindsay Clancy testify?
It remains unclear whether Clancy will take the witness stand.
There had been no public confirmation as of August 10 that she intended to testify. The decision rests with Clancy and her defence team.
Her testimony could be significant because the defence is seeking to establish that severe postpartum psychiatric illness affected her ability to understand or control her actions.
What happens if Lindsay Clancy is convicted?
If Clancy is convicted of first-degree murder, she faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole under Massachusetts law.
However, if the jury determines that she was not criminally responsible because of mental illness, she would not simply be released.
She could instead be committed to a state mental health facility, with any future release governed by Massachusetts law and subject to psychiatric assessments and other legal requirements.
The central issue before the jury is therefore not simply whether Clancy killed her children, but whether her alleged mental illness made her legally responsible for those deaths at the time of the killings.
