Congress MP Manish Tewari has put a number in front of the Election Commission that’s hard to look away from. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Chandigarh’s electorate stood at 6,59,805, of which 4,49,275 people voted, coming to a voter turnout of 68.1%. Two years later, following the 2026 SIR, Chandigarh’s total electorate has dropped to roughly 4,50,282. Comparing the eligible post-SIR electorate with the one that voted in 2024, Tewari argues that the turnout would come out to nearly 100% — a statistical coincidence he says defies the “preponderance of probability.”
