The US state of Massachusetts has officially declared August 15 as “India Day” to commemorate India’s 79th Independence Day and recognise the significant contributions of the Indian-American community to the state.
The proclamation was issued by Governor Maura Healey, while Boston Mayor Michelle Wu separately declared August 15 as India Day in the city of Boston, underscoring the growing cultural and economic ties between India and Massachusetts.
Recognition of Indian-American Contributions
The proclamation honours India’s independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, and acknowledges the achievements of Indian-Americans across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, technology, education, business and public service.
It also recognises the contributions of community organisations that have strengthened cultural, educational and people-to-people ties between India and the United States.
Announcement Coincides With New Indian Consulate
The declaration comes as the new Indian Consulate in Boston begins operations, a move expected to enhance diplomatic engagement and provide improved consular services to the growing Indian diaspora in the region.
The opening of the consulate reflects the expanding strategic, economic and educational partnership between India and the United States, particularly in New England.
Strengthening India-US Ties
The India Day proclamation highlights the longstanding relationship between Massachusetts and the Indian-American community, recognising its role in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, academic excellence and civic engagement.
