Govt Extracts Apology From Meta Executive Joel Kaplan For Restricting PM Modi's Facebook Post

meta executive joel kaplan apologises for 'error' restricting pm modi's facebook post

A top Meta executive on Wednesday apologised to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on behalf of the global giant for “restricting” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post.

“I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post,” Joel Kaplan, chief Global Affairs Officer at Meta, said in a statement.

The development came after Kaplan, along with a high-level delegation from Meta, met with the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), S Krishnan, in the national capital on Wednesday.

The meeting lasted around 45 minutes, during which Meta officials explained the reasons behind the erroneous takedown of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video. The officials also met IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

In a strongly worded communication to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Parliamentary Standing Committee expressed serious concern over the fact that a video of the Prime Minister addressing students and Gen Z regarding examination controversies and paper leaks was removed from Facebook for approximately five to six hours.
