The company originally announced in October 2024 that it would close about 1,200 underperforming stores over a three-year period, with around 500 closures planned last year. Since Walgreens went private in 2025, its new owners have reduced the pace of closures. The company now expects to close fewer than 100 stores in 2026, compared with earlier internal projections of nearly 700.
