That question came from Dr. Ramón Artemio Bracho, a physician from Paraguay. On a July evening in 1958, he was sharing dinner with a group of close friends in the riverside town of Puerto Pinasco. As conversations often do, theirs wandered from everyday life to bigger ideas. Someone pointed out that the calendar had days for mothers, fathers and lovers, but friendships, the relationships people often lean on the longest, had no celebration of their own. Most people would have laughed, paid the bill and gone home. Bracho didn’t.
