8th Pay Commission Update: Why The Centre Says It Is Not Tracking Commission's Progress

The 8th Pay Commission has completed a major portion of its assigned tenure, but the central government has clarified that it is under no obligation to receive periodic updates on the Commission’s work. The clarification, issued by the Finance Ministry in Parliament, underscores the Commission’s independence under its approved Terms of Reference (ToR). Constituted on November 3, 2025, the 8th Pay Commission was set up to recommend revisions to salaries, pensions, allowances and other service-related benefits for central government employees and pensioners. It is chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with Prof. Pulak Ghosh serving as Part-Time Member and Pankaj Jain as Member-Secretary.
